Samos Karlovassi

General information

Karlovassi village Samos: Karlovassi is the second largest town of Samos and it counts on 5,000 inhabitants most of whom are engaged in tourism and fishing. It is located 32 km north west of Samos town. The town of Karlovassi lies in one of the most fertile areas of Samos and consists of three settlements: the old town (at the port), the middle town and the new town.

The whole area is adorned with 19th century neoclassical buildings and elegant mansions that witness its glorious past. Numerous impressive churches embellish the town, like the Church of the Holy Trinity (the church of Agia Triada) that stands on top of the highest hill in Karlovasi, dominating the settlement.

Deserted tanneries still stand today, remnants of a time when commerce and trade flourished which brought wealth to the inhabitants of Karlovassi. It is the town where the first newspaper of Samos was published. Karlovassi offers many sightseeings like the ruins of a Byzantine castle, the waterfalls, the ceramic workshops and few lovely tiny villages in short distance from Karlovassi.

    Bit far from action centres
I visited Samos two years ago. I knew in advance that it is a big island, so we decided to rent a car to make a tour around the villages. We stayed in Karlovassi, a nice village but a bit far from the action centres of Samos. During our tour, we saw a lot of historical buildings and some well-preserved mansions that drew our attention. You also have plenty of choices in terms of nightlife and food on the island, everywhere and anytime. Good beaches close to Karlovasi are Mikro and Megalo Seitani, Agios Konstantinos and Tsamadou, a bit far from the village.

If you like trekking, you can follow the trail from Karlovassi to the waterfalls of Potami, but only if the day is not very hot because it is a long way. Drive from Karlovassi across the island and go to Ormos Marathokampou for really fresh fish. The travel guide was suggesting to visit the cave of Pythagoras, but we were out of days laying on the beach. Maybe next time!
