Skopelos Geography

Located in the northwestern part of the Aegean Sea, east of the enchanting Pelion, Skopelos is the second largest island of the Sporades after the secluded Skyros. Nestled between Skiathos and Alonissos, it has an area of 96 square kilometers, nearly 80% of which is covered by thick pine forests! This impressive figure actually makes it the most verdant island in the Aegean, which is why the Biopolitics International Organization officially proclaimed it a Green and Blue Island in 1997.

The terrain is mostly mountainous, with Dhelfi and Palouki being the highest peaks. Situated in the center of the island, the former rises to an altitude of 680 meters above sea level, while the latter can be found in the southeastern edge of Skopelos and reaches 566 meters. Between the two mountains stretches the lovely bay where Skopelos Town has been built, while Agnontas and Panormos in the west are the next two largest bays.

Due to the island's mountainous outline, the geography of Skopelos is characterized by a 67-kilometer-long rugged coastline which is often lined with dramatic cliffs. The northern and eastern coasts are rather rocky, dented by small coves which are often inaccessible; the southern and western coasts, by contrast, boast most of the island’s dreamy beaches, with Stafilos, Panormos, Agnontas, Limnonari, Milia, Kastani, Hovolo and Elios being but a few of them. Fringed by lush forests that descend all the way to the shore, these beaches stand out for their crystalline waters, which take on a plethora of mesmerizing shades of blue! At the same time, the shores of Skopelos are surrounded by several tiny islets like charming Dasia, whose rich marine life is a true delight for scuba diving enthusiasts.

Lastly, there are another two settlements in Skopelos besides Skopelos Town, the island’s capital and main harbor. The largest is the picturesque Glossa, which features the second biggest port in Skopelos, while the second is Neo Klima, which lies at the foot of verdant hills.
