More about Afytos
Afytos is home to a rich history that dates back to the early Bronze Age. Ancient Afytos was a flourishing city-state that participated in the Persian Wars as part of the Athenian Alliance. The city had even minted its own coin, with the depiction of Ammonas Zeus on one side and a bull on the other. After being destroyed by King Philip II of Macedon, it was reoccupied and saw a second era of major development during the Roman occupation. Later on, the village played a significant role in the Greek War of Independence and was the home of many revolutionaries.
One of the definite highlights is the church of Saint Demetrius in the central square, a three-aisled, wooden-roofed basilica with a dome that dates to 1859. The Folklore Museum of Afytos is another must-visit, located in the center of the village, close to Agios Dimitrios Church. Housed in a traditional stone building from the 19th century, it presents exhibits of household items and old tools and utensils, along with works of art and vintage photographs.
No visit to Afytos is complete without visiting its idyllic sandy beaches. Welcoming visitors with intoxicating waters and many rows of sunbeds and umbrellas, these beaches are some of the most sought-after beaches in Halkidiki. They are also lined with beach bars that serve refreshing drinks and delicious snacks. Moudounou Beach and Plage Liosi Beach are among the top swimming spots.

Douglas Smith 08 May 2025Charming village
Afytos or Afitos is indeed a charming village, which in the height of summer will be overflowing with tourists. We arrived Mid-May to find it just awakening from winter season, and daily, more tourist shops a, bars and restaurants opened daily. The town has many restaurants of good qualiry authentic food served by very friendly and happy staff. It was great fun talkibg to them. The town sits high above the beaches but its an easy saunter down and up. The water is still chilly in May but water is refreshing and calm for swimming. Nightlife centres round eating and drinking with a little music. Bakeries are full of truly delicious treats such as baclava and fine cheesecakes. Afytos suits middle ages and retired couples and will not disturb with pounding night clubs. Restful and tranquil. We stayed 2 eeeks at Agean Blue family hotel. This family also has its own winery which offers friendly tastings of the excellent wines! Come to Afytos early or late season to have more room!
