ABOUT PATMOS GREECE

Patmos belongs to the northern part of the Dodecanese island group. It is considered a small island, yet it has a long history and appeals pilgrims and fans of seclusion and serenity. It is definitely no coincidence that A-listers such as Richard Gere and Julia Roberts have fallen in love with the sacred island!

The island's most important monument is the Monastery of Saint John, which is situated on the top of a hill above Chora, the capital town. The fact that it is protected by walls makes it look like a fortress. There are many other churches and monasteries scattered throughout the island, attesting its permanently established bond with Orthodox Christianity. Another popular sight is, of course, the Cave of the Apocalypse, where, according to tradition, John the Theologian was inspired to write the Book of Revelation.
Due to its spiritual character, the island houses many religious festivals and feasts, which are a perfect opportunity for travelers to introduce themselves to the local tradition and history.

Chora is the island’s capital and one of the most picturesque villages of the Dodecanese. It showcases traditional architecture, thus it’s full of whitewashed houses and narrow paved alleys, and it offers wonderful views of the cerulean Aegean Sea.
There, you’ll find many hotels, cafes, restaurants and taverns, where you can taste the local delicacies.
In addition to the town, another rather famous spot is Skala, where the island’s port is located. The village's promenade is among the busiest areas on the island, hosting shops, restaurants and bars.

As for its beaches, they are breathtaking! The best organized beaches, such as Agriolivado and Livadi Geranou, are located on the northern side of the island. The rest of the island’s beaches are secluded, thus perfect for those who seek privacy. Lambi and Petra are probably the most unique ones, with the first having a shore full of colorful pebbles and the latter an impressive rock formation.
