ABOUT TILOS GREECE

Tilos is a small Aegean island that belongs to the Dodecanese complex. Due to its secluded location and small size, it is considered a destination off the beaten tourist trail. It has emerged as a great destination for alternative holidays, as camping and hiking are quite popular on the island.

The island has two main villages: Megalo Chorio and Livadia. Megalo Chorio, which is perched on the slopes of a mountain, is the island’s capital. It is characterized by a traditional charm, with whitewashed houses and small churches lining its rustic streets. Livadia is the main port and the best-developed village, offering visitors many facilities including hotels, restaurants, and shops.

The most mysterious village on the island, though, is undoubtedly Mikro Chorio. Often referred to as a ghost village, it was abandoned in the mid-20th century when its inhabitants moved to Livadia. Today it presents visitors with abandoned buildings, ruined structures, and old churches that are of much historical intrigue.

The landscape of Tilos is dominated by rocky hills and rugged coastlines. Many walking trails cross the island, allowing hiking enthusiasts to explore its unique morphology and uncover all its natural treasures. One of the most impressive natural landmarks on the island is the Charkadio Cave, where fossils of dwarf elephants were uncovered.

As for the beaches of Tilos, they boast a beautiful natural setting and a relaxing atmosphere. Standing out for their crystal clear waters and picturesque ambiance, they are perfect for those who want to unwind away from the noisy crowds. Most beaches can be easily accessed on foot or by a local bus from Livadia. Eristos Beach is by far the most popular, followed by Agios Antonios. Livadia Beach is the only beach on the island with sunbeds and umbrellas and lies within walking distance of the port.
