General information

Potamos is the largest village of Kythira, situated in the northeastern part of the island. Its name, derived from the Greek word for river, reflects the area’s rich vegetation and natural beauty. It serves as a central hub for commerce and social activities, maintaining a vibrant atmosphere year-round. The village is located approximately 19 kilometers from Chora and about 10 kilometers from the coastal village of Agia Pelagia.

The village is quite popular, evident from its bustling atmosphere, especially in the central square, which serves as a gathering place for locals and visitors alike. Every Sunday, Potamos hosts a vibrant market where local producers sell agricultural products, including olive oil, cheese, honey, figs, and jam. This market not only supports the local economy but also provides tourists with an authentic experience of Kythirian culture.

Visitors to Potamos can engage in various activities: exploring the local shops, cafés, and restaurants that offer a taste of traditional Greek cuisine and hospitality. The village’s philharmonic orchestra occasionally performs, providing cultural enrichment. Additionally, the surrounding landscapes are ideal for hiking and photography, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the island’s beauty.

    Nice During Flea Market
As most of the villages, Potamos is small, with not many strolling routes.
It is best to visit it during Sunday, when there is "flea market" at the main square, and buy some nice traditional food - figs, oil, traditional bread and so on.
