Tinos Kardiani

General information

Often characterized as one of the most beautiful villages in Tinos, Kardiani is a traditional settlement built on the verdant slopes of Mount Pateles, at an altitude of 260 meters above sea level. Offering stunning views of Syros and Gyaros, it stands out for its magnificent architecture, in which white marble plays a prominent role.

A maze of cobblestone alleys with narrow flights of stairs, stone archways, marble cisterns and quaint whitewashed houses with flowery gardens make up a true architectural gem that easily surpasses common notions of what a traditional Cycladic settlement looks like. The jewel in the crown of Kardiani is, however, its two outstanding churches: the Catholic Church of Panagia Kioura, with its monumental late-eighteenth-century fountain, and the Orthodox Church of Agia Triada. With its elaborate arch, five-story belfry and ornate interior and exterior marble decorations, the latter is, indeed, one of the finest specimens of the island’s long-standing marble-carving tradition.

More about Kardiani

Inside the local community center, visitors will also find the small yet noteworthy Kardiani Folklore Museum, which affords a unique insight into what life in this mountainous village was like during the previous centuries. Excavations in the wider area have also brought to light tombs dating from the Archaic Era, as well as traces from the Neolithic and the Early Cycladic periods, which indicate that Kardiani may well have been the first place to be settled on the entire island.

Though the village has not really been developed for tourism, it is possible to find a few traditional taverns and coffee houses, as well as a small municipal guesthouse. The verdant ravine surrounding Kardiani also leads to the lovely Giannaki Bay, which is sure to enchant visitors with its numerous charming swimming spots.
