Lesvos (also known as Mytilene) is a beautiful island in the eastern part of the Aegean Sea. It is one of the largest Greek islands and a popular destination for family vacation or relaxing holidays off the beaten tourist trail. Thanks to its close distance to Chios island, it is also a great base for island hopping!

Lesvos is dotted with many picturesque villages, such as Molyvos, Petra, Kalloni, Skala Sykamias and Mytilene. A drive around the island to explore these villages is a total must!

Except for quaint little villages, a drive around the island will also get you to many monuments. From Roman aqueducts to Byzantine monasteries and castles, you’ll have the chance to visit sites that date back to several historical periods!

Some must-visit monuments are the Medieval Castles of Mytilene, Molyvos and Sigri, which were used for defense from pirate invasions.
The Petrified Forest in Singri is another impressive site on the western side of the island. This forest was petrified about 15 to 20 million years ago due to volcanic activity and is considered a rare geological sight. Don’t miss it!

Another reason why this island is a wonderful destination is its beautiful monasteries, such as the Monastery of Ipsilou and the Monastery of Saint Raphael, the protector of the island.

Mytilene town
Mytilene is the capital and main port of Lesvos. This town distinguishes for the impressive architecture and places to see. Nice beaches are found in close distance.
Molyvos village
Located on the northern side of the island, Molyvos is probably the most beautiful village in Lesvos. It is constructed on the slopes of a hill and has a strong castle on top.
Castle of Molyvos
On top of the hill above Molyvos, there is a strong Medieval Castle that offers panoramic view to the village and the Aegean Sea.
Petra beach
In close distance to Molyvos, there is the beautiful and organized beach of Petra. This beach has sandy shore and crystal waters.
Petrified forest
In close distance to Sigri, on the western side of the island, there is a monument of rare natural beauty: the Petrified Forest, created because of the intense volcanic activity of the area.
Ouzo Museum
The most traditional product of Lesvos is ouzo, widely produced particularly in the region of Plomari. There you can find an interesting museum for ouzo distillation.
Agiassos village
The mountainous village of Agiassos distinguishes for the amazing style and the natural beauty. The locals have a long tradition in pottery and many ceramic workshops are found in the village.
Archaeological Museum
It hosts findings from excavations performed all over the island, such as small statues, Prehistoric items, parts of ancient temples, coins, jewelry, and others.
Monastery of Limonos
The Monastery of Limonos is the largest and most interesting on the island. It dates from the Byzantine times and has a large library with rare books and manuscripts.
Castle of Mytilene
On the side of Mytilene, there is a large castle with Medieval walls that used to protect the town from enemies and pirates. In the later centuries, this castle was reformed.
Roman Aqueduct
Dating from the 3rd century AD, the Roman Aqueduct of Moria was an important technical work of this era. Today it can be visited as an archaeological site.
Ancient Theatre
On the northern side of Mytilene, amidst pine trees, there is the Ancient Theatre of Lesvos. Originally built in the Hellenistic times, this theatre has undergone many reformations throughout its operation.
